Addresses

Every address form helps you write the address instead of making you type every part of it.

Where: the address of a customer or vendor (on its card and when you create one), the company profile (Settings → Company) and a warehouse. Over the API it is GET /v1/addresses/suggestions, GET /v1/addresses/details and GET /v1/addresses/towns (addresses API). Address help is a feature module of its own (ADR-0102).

Find the address

Type the street and number (or a place) into Find the address. After three characters it suggests up to five whole addresses in the country of the form; pick one and the street, building number, postal code, town, canton or state and country are filled in. Check them and save as usual: nothing is saved until you do.

The suggestions come from Google Maps (Google's Places API). Only the text you type and the country go to Google, through Stabiso's own server: never the name of the customer, vendor or company, and no key of Google's reaches your browser. Nothing of it is stored. Where the server has no key for Google, the box is not shown and you type the address as before.

Google charges Stabiso per address picked (the suggestions while you type are included); the first 10,000 a month are free. An organization may look up 5,000 suggestions and 2,000 addresses a day, so a runaway script cannot run up the bill (rate_limited after that).

The town from the postal code

Type the postal code and the town is filled in while the town field is empty (or still holds the town filled in before), with the canton or state where none is chosen yet. A postal code that covers several towns offers them to pick. A town you typed yourself is never replaced. This works without Google, from open postal code data shipped with Stabiso, for Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States (the state only: the ZIP code's town is left to you). Elsewhere the suggestions of Find the address fill the town.

The postal code data is the Countries States Cities Database (@countrystatecity/postalcodes, Open Database License 1.0), built from GeoNames, OpenPLZ, CartoCiudad and other open registers; their credits are in NOTICE-SOURCES.txt beside the data.

Country and canton or state

The country is picked from the list of countries by its name, your company's country first; it is stored as its two-letter ISO code (CH). The canton or state is picked from a list for Switzerland, Germany, Austria, the United States and Canada, and stored as its ISO 3166-2 code (CH-ZH); for other countries it stays a field you type in. A US customer of a US company must have its state (it decides the sales tax); a Spanish customer's subdivision follows from its postal code (the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are outside Spanish VAT).
